I thinks the key thing is that you have about 400 pixels in width to work with. I can get two pictures side by side as long as they are less than 400 pixels wide combined.
Upload one picture, orient it to the left. Upload another picture immediately after that one, orient it to the right. if the pics aren't too wide they should go side by side. If they don't, make sure that there are no line breaks between the pics. If they still don't tweak your template to make your post column wider. Still can't do it, pester me. I have a lot of work to do tonight and for some reason the game isn't a satisfying distraction.
I use Photobucket to host my photos. I re-size them using their editor tool and shrink them down to medium size. I then cut and past the HTML for the picture into the body of my post. I put 2 spaces in between each photo. Once posted they usually will display side by side nicely as long as the orientation is the same.

At least that's how I did it here.
the few times i have done it, i have just created a single image to upload that incorporates the two pictures using paint or some other program.

Explorer is the best browser for photo arranging in Blogger, Firefox is ok, Google Chrome is frustration.

If it means you can post two of those cheerleaders side by side, I'm all for it.
